Union welcomes massive $291 million funding boost for frontline domestic violence workers

Australian Services Union Media Release 4th March 2026

The Australian Services Union (ASU) has warmly welcomed the Albanese Government’s $291.7 million funding boost for the frontline family, domestic, and sexual violence workforce, describing it as a landmark recognition of the workers who save lives every day.

The announcement, delivered today by Minister for Social Services Tanya Plibersek and Assistant Minister for the Prevention of Family Violence Ged Kearney alongside the ASU, represents a 72% boost in funding for the next phase of the 500 Workers initiative.

“This $291 million is an amazing contribution to a crucial workforce that have been doing vital, difficult work” said Emeline Gaske, National Secretary of the ASU.

“There is no frontline service without the workers, and today’s announcement shows that the Albanese Government is proud to stand alongside them.

“Importantly, this investment is about respect. By extending these contracts, the Government is providing the job security this workforce needs and deserves.

“This is a vital step in preventing turnover and ensuring we keep the specialist skills, knowledge, and experience that these workers have brought to these roles on the ground.”

For ASU members, this funding represents more than just a budget line. it means investing in Australians who are doing essential work, to support women and children fleeing violence with essential services including safety planning, counselling, and access to essential housing.

Frontline workers are the backbone of the national response to the family violence crisis and are often the first point of contact for victim-survivors in their most challenging moments. This funding will prevent turnover and retain the skills, knowledge and experience the workers have brought to the first tranche of this program.

“When we support the workforce, we are investing in the safety of every woman and child they reach,” Ms Gaske said. “The ASU is proud to see the Government backing our members with the sustainability and security they need to continue their life-changing work.”
