Teachers and support staff issue ultimatum for further strike action

Australian Education Union Tasmania Media Release 6th March 2026

Public sector unions will commence rolling, statewide 24-hr strike action if Premier Rockliff fails to resolve negotiations for new public sector collective agreements by Friday, 20 March 2026.

The Premier’s refusal to negotiate fairly with educators to address rising school violence and unsafe workloads is fuelling the crisis in public education. Workers are now left with no choice but to escalate industrial action unless Premier Rockliff intervene to ensure negotiations are resolved.

Enough is enough.

Members feel the Rockliff Government has treated them with contempt by refusing to negotiate conditions to address unsafe workloads, unpaid stand down, and rising classroom violence.

In the absence of an offer that adequately addresses the significant issues facing education, members feel they have been left no alternative but to take unprecedented action.

If AEU members do not receive an offer addressing these concerns by close of business Friday, 20 March 2026,  24-hour strike actions will take place on the following dates:

  • North West Tasmania – Tuesday, 24 March 2026
  • Northern Tasmania – Wednesday, 25 March 2026
  • Southern Tasmania – Thursday, 26 March 2026
